The MA TESOL Pre-Departure 2025 event took place in a warm and emotional atmosphere at VNUK, marking the moment when learners prepare to officially depart for the United Kingdom to begin their Master’s journey at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Beyond visa updates and paperwork, this year’s program offered practical insights, valuable experiences, and direct advice from NTU lecturers, IDP experts, and alumni of the MA TESOL program.

Four Key Takeaways from the Pre-Departure

1. REALISTIC – Depth Over Breadth
The sharing session with Dr. Amy Wang and Dr. Sarah Khan eased many academic concerns. Instead of trying to tackle overly broad topics, learners are encouraged to choose a very specific research scope and explore it in depth. Critical thinking, strong reasoning, and methodological consistency are the core elements of a high-quality dissertation at NTU.
2. PREPARE – Life in Nottingham: Small Things That Matter
The session became more intimate as speakers and alumni shared practical tips for living in the UK:
- Smart packing: No need to bring bulky household items—affordable options are available at Aldi and Tesco. Instead, familiar utensils or small items from Vietnam may be more useful.
- Managing the weather: January in the UK is very cold. Learners are advised to prepare heat pads and thin thermal layers to wear daily.
- Mental well-being: Due to limited sunlight in winter, learners should consider taking Vitamin D to avoid fatigue or seasonal mood changes.
3. SAFETY FIRST – Safety as a Top Priority

Although Nottingham is a friendly city, learners were reminded to avoid walking alone after 20:00, not feel obliged to give money to strangers on the street, and always prioritize moving in groups. Following these simple guidelines ensures a safer and smoother study journey.
4. CONNECT – Don’t Become an “Island”
Learners are encouraged to integrate and stay connected through:
- Student bus apps for cost-effective transport
- Short weekend trips
- Sports clubs such as badminton or the university gym
Building connections plays an essential role in reducing stress, expanding networks, and adapting quickly to a new environment.
Support from Home

The organizing team prepared UK SIM cards for each learner, ensuring immediate connectivity upon arrival. Small Christmas-themed gifts were also given as warm wishes before departure.
The baggage that MA TESOL 2025 learners bring to NTU goes beyond warm clothing or personal items—it includes sharp academic thinking, practical living experience, and the confidence that VNUK and NTU will accompany them every step of the way.

Wishing all MA TESOL 2025 learners a safe flight and a fulfilling, vibrant learning journey in the United Kingdom!
