Meet Truong Quoc Viet – recipient of the VNUK 2023 Talent Scholarship in Data Science
We had a chat with Truong Quoc Viet, the cool-looking student from Phan Chau Trinh High School, to hear about his last-minute “pivot” to Data Science and how he successfully secured the VNUK 2023 Talent Scholarship.
Quoc Viet’s life motto is: “Speak less, do more.” He believes that “talking won’t get you anywhere,” so he usually keeps his plans and ideas to himself, quietly working to turn them into reality. Only when he achieves results does he feel confident enough to share them with others.
Regarding his scholarship, Quoc Viet is still pleasantly surprised and expresses his sincere gratitude to the teachers and staff at VNUK:
“I did my best in the interview round but didn’t expect too much from the outcome, thinking there would be many other strong candidates. Receiving the Talent Scholarship is a huge encouragement for me. I also want to thank Ms. Thuc Anh – the VNUK Admissions Officer – for her full support from A to Z, and the evaluation committee for giving me the opportunity to receive this scholarship.”
The last-minute pivot to Data Science
Data Science wasn’t Quoc Viet’s initial choice: “I originally planned to apply for International Tourism and Hotel Management. But during a family discussion, my father suggested a more flexible field: Data Science. I wasn’t particularly fond of IT at first, but as I researched and explored, I gradually became fascinated by the world of computers, data, and numbers. I also realized the immense potential of this ‘hot’ field in the 4.0 era and its flexible applications, so I boldly decided to ‘pivot’ and choose Data Science at VNUK.”
Quoc Viet hopes to learn a lot and expand his network in VNUK’s dynamic environment. He also plans to join campus clubs to make his four years at university colorful and engaging. With an IELTS score of 6.5, he’s ready to tackle the international program at VNUK. A small tip for those who want to connect with this scholarship recipient: Quoc Viet has his eyes on a spot in the school basketball team, so watch out for practice sessions or games to cheer for this multi-talented student.
