Previously, I was an IELTS teacher at a center in Da Nang. I always wanted to improve my own qualifications and make my lessons more effective for my students. Therefore, in 2023, I nurtured the intention to pursue a master’s degree in English Language Teaching. After researching many programs nationwide, I finally “sealed the deal” by choosing to study the MA TESOL programme with VNUK and NTU.

Actually, there were quite a few reasons why this course was the “perfect match” for me at that time. Firstly, the program lasted one year, saving more time compared to other master’s programs in different countries. Not only did it save time, but the course also helped students save on accommodation and food expenses by having one semester studied in Vietnam (at VNUK). This made the program more accessible given the economy was still recovering after the Covid pandemic.

Continuous Care, Support, and Connection from Reputable Units and NTU

During the first semester, students were taught by PhDs in Linguistics from the University of Foreign Language Studies, Da Nang University, along with continuous and dedicated support from the NTU faculty, which made me very satisfied with my studies at VNUK. In addition, visa application preparation was also greatly supported by the reputable unit IDP.

Finally, and the biggest plus, is that in December, students officially arrive in the United Kingdom to study at Nottingham Trent University. This will be a memorable experience and a highlight on the students’ CVs, compared to joint master’s programs that offer an international degree but are studied only in Vietnam.

I Feel More Complete Both Personally and Professionally as a Teacher

I feel that I changed a lot after the course, both in teaching expertise and in my outlook on life. Professionally, my starting point was not in Education but in English Language. The MA TESOL course “filled in” what I was missing; I absorbed a lot of knowledge about teaching methods theories, practiced my teaching skills, and learned to apply and select approaches suitable for the current teaching context and subjects. I personally felt progress and intellectual growth after completing the course.

Regarding the “mindset,” I was able to step out of my comfort zone, experience the culture, and immerse myself in the beauty of the UK. This experience broadened my perspective in evaluating things and helped me become stronger and more mature after spending time away from family, balancing study, work, and even learning to cook and take care of myself.

03 things that impressed me most about the VNUK team and the MA TESOL program:

The dedication of the teachers and the support staff in all tasks.
The interesting and up-to-date knowledge delivered effectively, especially by teachers Hung, Hang, James, Amy, Sam, Sarah, Clara, Peter, and others. The content was focused and met the learners’ needs.
The excellent learning environment (classrooms and campus location).

If I had to pick the most impressive point, it would be the dedication and wholehearted support from the teachers at VNUK and NTU. They are always willing to listen and give feedback to students, maintaining timely and efficient communication through email and MS Teams between instructors and learners.

Make sure to research carefully and don’t miss the “turning point” in your career path.

Be clear about your needs and circumstances. Take time to thoroughly compare and consider different study programs before making your decision. What might seem like just a course at first could become a pivotal moment and an unforgettable experience in both your career and personal life.
