Putting aside lesson plans, we “shaped” our own joy with the MA TESOL VNUK family.
Recently, learners from the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL) — a joint program between the VN-UK Institute for Research and Executive Education (The University of Danang) and Nottingham Trent University (UK) — enjoyed a meaningful field trip to Thanh Hà Pottery Village in Hội An. It was a precious opportunity to step away from daily busyness, listen to the stories of earth and fire, and rediscover a sense of inner balance.
A Journey of Connection
The trip began in an atmosphere full of excitement and positive energy. The strong bond between lecturers and students — a hallmark of the VNUK community — was once again evident throughout the journey.
Listening to a Thousand-Year Story of Clay
Upon arriving at Thanh Hà Pottery Village, the group was welcomed by a serene landscape, completely detached from the hustle of city life. Surrounded by rustic scenery and the warm hospitality of local artisans, MA TESOL learners found a peaceful space to breathe and reflect.
Here, the group was guided through the village’s history. Visual displays vividly illustrated the development of the craft, allowing learners to understand the daily labor and cultural heritage of past generations. These stories were not only about Thanh Hà but also about the long-standing tradition of pottery-making — a valuable cultural supplement to the learners’ social and academic knowledge.
As they walked along the exhibition path, learners had the chance to admire intricate artwork crafted by master artisans. The highs and lows of the village’s history were brought to life through sophisticated relief sculptures, each silently narrating the passage of time.
Becoming “Apprentice Artisans”
The most exciting highlight was the hands-on pottery-making activity at the Terracotta Park. Instead of observing from afar, future educators sat at the potter’s wheel and experienced the crafting process firsthand.
With clay-covered hands and focused minds, learners truly felt the skill and artistry required of professional potters. This activity perfectly reflected the “learning by doing” philosophy that Nottingham Trent University and VNUK actively promote. Learning goes beyond textbooks and lecture halls — it involves exploration, real-world engagement, and drawing insights from lived experience to enrich the teaching journey ahead.
Afternoon Tea & A Meaningful Souvenir
After moments of joyful creativity, the group enjoyed a relaxing afternoon tea in a unique architectural space. The trip became even more memorable as each participant received a special gift: handmade clay figurines representing the 12 zodiac animals — small but heartfelt tokens from local artisans.

The journey concluded with a cozy dinner at Viet Xua Restaurant. This visit to Thanh Hà Pottery Village was more than a simple excursion — it embodied the holistic, UK-standard educational philosophy of the MA TESOL program.
