    Important Information Students Need to Know About Health Insurance

    Students Need to Know the Following Information to Ensure Their Benefits When Participating in Health Insurance

    What is Health Insurance?

    Health Insurance (HI) is a social policy designed to mobilize community contributions, share the risks of illness, and reduce the financial burden on individuals when they fall ill. It creates a financial resource to support healthcare activities and promotes fairness and humanity in protecting and caring for public health.

    This is a compulsory form of insurance applied to subjects as regulated by the Health Insurance Law. It aims to provide healthcare services and is non-profit, organized and implemented by the State.

    What are the benefits of participating in Health Insurance?

    When participating in health insurance, participants are entitled to the following benefits:

    – Choice of Medical Facility: Health insurance participants can choose a convenient medical facility near their workplace or residence, following the guidelines of the Social Insurance Agency, to register for initial medical examinations and treatments. They are allowed to change their registered facility at the beginning of each quarter.

    – Reduced Medical Costs: Depending on the participant’s category and the nature of their illness or accident, they may receive full or partial coverage of treatment and medical examination costs at public healthcare facilities.

    Is it mandatory to purchase health insurance through the school?

    According to Article 1 of Government Decree No. 146/2018/ND-CP, the following groups are required to participate in health insurance:

    – Groups whose premiums are paid by employees and employers;

    – Groups whose premiums are paid by social insurance agencies;

    – Groups whose premiums are paid by the State budget;

    – Groups whose premiums are subsidized by the State budget;

    – Groups participating in health insurance through family households;

    – Groups whose premiums are paid by employers.

    Specifically, according to Clause 3, Article 4 of this Decree, students belong to the group whose premiums are subsidized by the State budget—one of the six groups required to participate in health insurance.

    If students do not purchase health insurance through the school, they can participate in family health insurance. Clause 3, Article 50 of the 2008 Health Insurance Law stipulates that individuals who have not yet participated in compulsory health insurance may voluntarily participate in health insurance according to government regulations.
