From Da Nang to Birmingham: The Story of VNUK Students Reaching Out to the World

Bao Thach, Thien An, and Bao Ngoc are three students currently studying at Aston University, United Kingdom, through VNUK’s 3+1 transfer program. Let’s hear their stories and experiences on this special journey!

A Fresh New Experience for the VNUK Trio at Aston University, UK

“What excites me the most is the opportunity to study in a new country, to learn new lessons, and to interact with students from diverse cultures. Moreover, I get to see famous landmarks that I never imagined I would witness in person.

Besides, if this is your first time studying abroad alone, it will definitely be a chance for you to grow up and build your own life in a completely new country,” shared Bao Ngoc (21IBM1), one of the three VNUK students currently studying under the 3+1 transfer program at Aston University, UK.

From Da Nang to the bustling lifestyle of Birmingham, this is not just a trip but a journey of growth, maturity, and turning dreams into reality. VNUK congratulates you on your persistent efforts so far and wishes all our students a successful learning journey ahead!

3 VNUK Students and Life in the UK

To you, VNUK students still nurturing the dream of a new country, know that this world is vast and profound. If it sparks your curiosity, take the step—whether brief or long—to realize that you too can understand and grow deeper in many ways.

Let’s listen together to the study abroad stories in the UK through the perspectives of 3 VNUK students right here.

The Preparation Journey to “Touch” the UK Dream

To turn their dream of going to Aston University into reality, VNUK students need not only determination but also a long journey of preparation! From training their language skills, thoroughly researching the culture and learning environment in the UK, to completing complicated paperwork.

“The most important thing is to clearly understand the information and have the right orientation in the field of study at Aston. I have been rooted at the VNUK International Office for Q&A sessions, as well as participated in related workshops to learn more about the university. Also, if you want a smooth start in your studies and networking in the UK, a solid foundation of professional knowledge is crucial, especially since I am in my final year. The good news is Aston also offers scholarships to students in the program, so maintaining a good GPA will be very beneficial for interested students,” shared Bao Thach, K21DBM student.

Aston University is consistently ranked among the top universities in the United Kingdom and is one of the top 20 universities with the highest graduate employment rates.

For Thien An, having an English certificate is essential when studying abroad, and “you shouldn’t miss any opportunity to earn points because even 10% can make a big difference between a B+ and an A. High grades also significantly increase the chances of getting a scholarship.”

Besides preparing the necessary paperwork and soft skills to adapt to life in the UK, Bao Ngoc also shared: “Throughout this process, you will always receive dedicated support from the international cooperation office staff at VNUK, so don’t worry. You shouldn’t let time pressure overwhelm you and should ideally make your decision a year in advance to avoid feeling rushed.”

Opportunities and challenges are stepping stones on your path to maturity and success. Don’t be afraid—remember that everyone feels anxious before a big opportunity. What you should do is prepare thoroughly and seize the right moment.

    Experiences in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Studying in the UK, these 3 VNUK students have experienced an academic environment in one of the world’s leading education systems, with modern facilities and opportunities to expand multinational networks. “Meeting more new friends helps build a network and also learn new perspectives on the economic and cultural aspects of a region or country, which helps evaluate what kind of working environment suits oneself,” shared Thien An.

Not only is the “Land of the Fog” famous for its advanced education system, but it is also home to magnificent landmarks such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and charming historic streets. Especially, England is the birthplace of theatrical arts with Shakespeare’s timeless plays, where you can enjoy the thrilling atmosphere of the Premier League and savor the traditional dish of fish & chips.

Experiences of VNUK Students in the United Kingdom

“If you’re a city person, Birmingham will not disappoint you. There’s everything you need, from restaurants to entertainment venues, so you won’t feel lost living here. The cities are close to each other, just about an hour by train, so you can explore many places without having to plan too much,” shared Bảo Ngọc.

    A Future Full of Opportunities

The UK is not only a dream destination with an advanced education system but also a gateway to countless opportunities. Students don’t just gain specialized knowledge from top professors but also have access to modern research facilities, advanced technologies, and internships at leading global companies and corporations.

The multicultural environment in the UK helps students easily connect, expand their international network, and develop diverse life skills. These experiences not only boost confidence in communication but also open up global career paths — from working opportunities in the UK after graduation to adapting easily in any international environment.

Bảo Thạch shared: “From a career perspective, work experience in the UK will be a huge plus for me, especially as I aim to develop in an international environment. Participating in the transfer program is a ‘must-have’ condition for me to achieve this goal with a degree from Aston as well as having a year to get used to and keep up with life in the UK.”

Moreover, studying in the UK helps “improve communication skills in many aspects in English, which is necessary for working at multinational corporations or participating in international trade,” Thiên An added.

Advice for VNUK Students Aspiring to Study in the UK

For VNUK students planning to join transfer programs, Bảo Ngọc shared from her own experience: “Pay attention to deadlines, whether it’s during the application process or job seeking in the UK. Visa procedures can be complicated, but if you stay careful and keep your information updated regularly, it won’t be too difficult.”

Workshop between the Delegation from Aston University and VNUK Students

The workshop shared valuable information about the cooperation between VNUK and Aston University, as well as useful knowledge for students interested in the transfer program at Aston.

Don’t forget, the VNUK faculty are always ready to support you! Bảo Thạch said, “I know you’ll have a thousand questions, so don’t hesitate to ask the VNUK lecturers. Many of them have studied in the UK and are happy to help. And if you ever need advice from me, just reach out—I’m always ready to support everyone.”

Preparing the necessary documents is important, but adapting to a new life very different from Vietnam is equally crucial.

Thiên An shared, “It’s normal when foreigners talk and you don’t understand, and when you speak, they might not understand either. Sometimes they just nod and move on, so don’t be afraid. People who really care will ask until they understand. So don’t pressure yourself if they don’t get you right away. They’ve been exposed to all the nuances of English since they were born, while you’re just starting out—it’s totally normal.

You need to learn how to cook, or at least have a bank account with a 100-digit number! You might not realize it in Vietnam, but buying ingredients and cooking at home can save you more than half compared to eating out.”

Bảo Ngọc also advises: “Enjoy the atmosphere of Vietnam and take care of your health.”

Going abroad lets you see how vast the world really is and helps you grow. Thiên An believes, “Opportunities only open for those who are ready and brave enough to face challenges.”

“Studying abroad is not just a learning journey; it’s an opportunity to broaden your worldview, explore new cultures, and push beyond your limits. From preparing your knowledge and skills to overcoming challenges abroad, every experience is a piece of the puzzle that shapes your growth.

We wish you confidence in pursuing your dreams because every step of preparation today builds a strong foundation for great success tomorrow.”

Thank you to Bảo Thạch, Thiên An, and Bảo Ngọc for their insights. VNUK wishes you resilience and a memorable study journey in the United Kingdom!
