VNUK’s visit to STEM education organisation in South Korea

During the trip to Korea, the representatives from VN-UK Institute for Research and Executive Education visited and worked with Korea’s leading STEM education organization EQSTEM. Dr. Nguyen Thi My Huong – Deputy Vice Rector and Dr. Tran The Vu – Head of the Academic Affairs Department, had an exchange on STEM education philosophy with Christina Kim – Director of EQSTEM. According to Ms. Kim, STEM education is now inaccurately understood in many places. Many organizations claim that teaching robotics or programming is STEM. However, STEM is an integrated educational approach that develops many skills for learners including creativity, thinking, teamwork, and many other skills, and it also covers a variety of subjects. Ms. Kim also shared the determination to bring STEM education to many Korean students in the near future so that they can develop more professionally.

The visit was an opportunity for VNUK to learn about the model and approach of STEM training in advanced countries. VNUK has been implementing the project “Building Innovation and Business into STEM Education“, supported by the British Council under the Higher Education Partnership (HEP) Initiative. The HEP initiative aims at enabling and expanding partnerships between the UK and Vietnamese universities; sharing UK experiences and expertise; and building capacity for Vietnamese universities to meet Vietnam’s higher education renovation targets. Priorities of the HEP Initiative include university governance, quality assurance, teaching and learning and research and graduate employability. In 2017–2018, innovation, entrepreneurship and start-up culture was the key priority for collaboration.

The overall goal of the project is to support the promotion of the Vietnamese entrepreneurial system through the promotion of students’ capacities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and integrate this skill with knowledge and assets for high school students in Vietnam.

The project implemented a training program for 40 high schools teachers and creative organizations in Da Nang city and Quang Nam province in May. On 17/7/2018, the project will host a STEM Education Workshop with the participation of leading STEM education organizations in Vietnam, British Council, Saigon Scientists and high school teachers in Da Nang city.
